It’s so easy to fall in love with a city when history is as unique as Cairo’s. The crowds here may make Kampala look like a ghost town, but it’s a small price to pay to experience the energy of the city Egyptians know as Umm ad Dunya – ‘the Mother of the World’. Use our guide to discover modern-day Cairo as you’ve never seen it before.

Here are the fun things you can do in Cairo:

The Pyramids Of Giza

There is probably no other city in the world where modern architecture is topped by such a magnificent 4,000-year-old complex of royal pyramids, temples, and causeways. Any trip to the Egyptian capital must start with these majestic creations. They go from Menakaure, the smallest pyramid, to Khafre, the second-largest, to Khufu, better known as the Great Pyramid of Giza. To avoid the smog, head down in the afternoon.

The Sphinx

A short drive to the city side of the Giza plateau takes you to the feet of the Sphinx, another enigmatic symbol of ancient Egypt. An aged marvel, the reclining lion with a human head sits proudly on the Nile's west bank. For thousands of years, the mysterious Sphinx has been looming over Giza, guarding the only remaining of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World. It has greatly inspired the imaginations of emperors, poets, artists, scholars, and travelers for centuries, and remains a truly enigmatic feature of Cairo.

The Egyptian Museum Of Antiquities, Museum
Back in the center of Cairo, just outside Tahrir Square, visitors will find the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities (Midan El-Tahrir); one of the many museums in the city that invite people to explore Egypt’s glorious past. Definitely a must-see while in town, the museum houses a unique collection of more than 160,000 pieces of ancient Egyptian history. Take the time to browse through the museum’s chambers, dedicated to some of Egypt’s most prosperous dynasties, and discover what life was like during the reign of the Pharaohs.

Other sites to see include: Old Cairo, The Hanging Church Of The Virgin Mary, The Khan el Khalili Bazaar, Al-Azhar Mosque, The Coptic Museum and Cairo Tower

Sharm el Sheik

Up until 1968, Sharm el-Sheikh was nothing more than a quiet fishing community. But in recent years, it has become one of Egypt‘s most popular beach resorts, with tourists coming from all parts of the world. Hot in the summer, while pleasant and warm in the winter, Sharm remains the leading tourist sport in the Sinai Peninsula. Just check out this mix of fantastic things to do and see!

Here are the fun things you can do in Sharm:

Undoubtedly Sharm el-Sheik is the watersports Mecca of Egypt: you name it, this resort has it. Get your flippers on and take a tour of Egypt’s coral reefs scuba diving. The Red Sea bottom is scattered with shipwrecks and its waters have some of the world’s most diverse marine life. You can also try kite surfing, waterskiing, and windsurfing. And don’t worry if you’re not a confident swimmer – glass-bottomed boat trips are available in Sharm el-Sheikh at all times!

Aqua Blue Water Park

If you’re traveling with little ones, spending the day at Aqua Blue is quite the treat. Located in Hadaba, this water paradise guarantees a fun-packed day for everyone. With its 44 water slides and games and 9 pools, the water park will make sure you get your adrenaline fix. Slides like Kamikaze and Black Hole will get your pulse racing, and kids under 12 will find a range of smaller slides just for them.

Submarine tour in Sharm El sheik:

Take advantage of the marvelous warm weather in Sharm el-Shiekh with a half-day out on the Red Sea. Climb aboard a fascinating semi-submarine and explore the underwater world off the shores of Sharm El-Shiekh. Semi-submarines have large panoramic windows and do not dive very deep. This gives you the best views under the water, especially near reefs. After breakfast, you will be picked up at your hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle and taken on an unforgettable trip. Immerse yourself in the Red Sea and marvel at the colorful fish, reefs, and corals. You will have approximately 40 minutes to make the most of the opportunity to enjoy snorkeling and experience the fascinating nature.

Optional Quad bike desert Safari.

Journey through the desert in Sharm El-Sheikh, the splendid resort town of Egypt, with an exhilarating quad bike ride. Experience the race over the steep dunes and take in the vibe of either sunrise or sunset in a mind-blowing desert ambiance.

Travel tips:

How to get around Cairo

Cairo is huge and the main sights are located a bit far from each other.

The best way to get to some of the places (Egyptian Museum and the Downtown, Cairo Tower, Coptic Cairo or Khan el-Khalili) is by metro. It’s fast, cheap and easy to use (there are signs in both Arabic and English)

How to get a SIM card at Cairo airport

When you leave the arrival hall, still in the building, on the left you will find the booths of three mobile phone providers: Vodafone, Etisalat, and Orange.
